Green Button 3.0 - Becoming Better Together

Green Button 3.0 - Taking the next step. Together.

The Green Button has been regularly revised in consultation with key Green Button stakeholders (brands, producers, and civil society) since its conception in 2019. Now, the time has come for the next step in its evolution.

We want to address current challenges and make the certification future-proof. The Green Button 3.0 (working title) will bring new requirements, alongside simplification, clarity, and further direction.

What is certain: The current criteria will remain valid for the time being. As with previous revisions, there will be a transitory phase until the new standard enters into force – so that the Green Button evolution can be transparent, fair, and easy to plan for all parties involved.

Goals for the Green Button 3.0: Clear, Impactful, Future-ready

The Green Button is staying true to its mission: To transform textile supply chains through verifiable corporate due diligence. As the only certification of its kind to be accredited by the German national accreditation body (DAkkS), the Green Button addresses all brands who want to make their sustainably produced textiles known on the market.

The Green Button 3.0 will include necessary adjustments to ensure that the Standard is future-ready.
Important developments include

  • a greater consideration of environmental and climatic protections

  • an integration of lessons-learned to make the criteria sleeker and more accessible

The focus on living wages remains central to the standard, and work accomplished thus far on this topic will retain its validity.

Co-creation of the Green Button 3.0 through Stakeholder Dialogue

The revision of the Green Button Standard is a collaborative process. Brands, producers, workers, consumers, civil society and academia are warmly invited to share their perspectives. The Green Button can only improve, if it listens to the voices it intends to support.

The following opportunities are available for external feedback for the revision:

  • Online Consultation for easy and accessible feedback

  • Webinars giving insight into the revision process and allowing space for dialogue

  • Round tables in person enabling feedback on a level playing field

Another core element of the revision’s co-creatve process is the Standards Committee. The Committee will be called at regular intervals throughout the development of the revised standard and will consist of representatives from diverse stakeholder groups. The Committee will advise the license holder (the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development- BMZ) on developments within the revision process.

Through these multiple avenues, the Green Button 3.0 is being co-created in collaboration with many voices and a clear goal- to work together to make textile supply chains more sustainable and fair.
